Worship

Where did Adam and Eve go to worship? Did they worship? Did they pray? Read Gen 2. Didn’t they walk and talk with God, just like we walk and talk with each other? Didn’t God go walking in the garden? They didn’t pray to God like we do; they saw Him, walked with Him, and hung out.

At a time after the fall of man, when Eve bore Seth, and to Seth was born, Enos, then began men to callH7121 upon the name of Yehovah. What does that mean “to callH7121 upon the name of Yehovah”?

Call H7121 qa^ra^' kaw-raw' A primitive root (rather identical with H7122 through the idea of accosting a person met); to call out to (that is, properly address by name, but used in a wide variety of applications): - bewray [self], that are bidden, call (for, forth, self, upon), cry (unto), (be) famous, guest, invite, mention, (give) name, preach, (make) proclaim (-ation), pronounce, publish, read, renowned, say.

Accost means to aggressively stop someone in the way to speak.

First, Adam & Eve were driven from the garden. Later, Cain went out from the presence of Yehovah. Knowing that things got worse and worse until Noah, it’s logical to reason that more and more people went out from the presence of Yehovah until the only way to know Yehovah was to look back and “call out“, hoping that He would hear. (Yehovah never forsook man, He just held him at a distance; like having a pet skunk.)

So, mankind was routinely in the presence God until there came the day when God was a little further away, and men had to commune with God in a more distant way: building an alter, and making a sacrifice.

To worship God, men built alters to call upon the name of Yehovah. Apparently, it wasn’t as simple as turning to see God face to face. Is this not the same way we pray to God today? Do we not believe by faith that Yehovah hears us and will reward us for our seeking him? We don’t see Yehovah face to face; we seek him by faith.

Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Exo 34:8 And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.H7812

Let’s get it right and clear what the word “worship” means:

Hebrew

H7812 Worship sha^cha^h shaw-khaw' A primitive root; to depress, that is, prostrate (especially reflexively in homage to royalty or God): - bow (self) down, crouch, fall down (flat), humbly beseech, do (make) obeisance, do reverence, make to stoop, worship.

Prostrate means to lie flat out on the ground in humility.

Bowed head H6915 qa^dad kaw-dad' A primitive root; to shrivel up, that is, contract or bend the body (or neck) in deference: - bow (down) (the) head, stoop.

Greek

Worship G4352 proskuneō pros-koo-neh'-o From G4314 and probably a derivative of G2965 (meaning to kiss, like a dog licking his master’s hand); to fawn or crouch to, that is, (literally or figuratively) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore): - worship.

[Here’s that word “literal or figurative”--if you don’t want to get your shirt dirty, you can prostrate figuratively . . . not.]

By looking at the definitions, we see that music, praise, study of the Word, giving, prayer, preaching, sacraments, baptism, communion, and love feasts are not included. Go back to look at it again, and see if that’s wrong. Give Yehovah the glory, and rejoice in the truth. It looks like Worship is the position assumed. Hold the thought.

Lift up your hands

Neh 8:6 And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting upH4607 their hands:H3027 and they bowedH6915 their heads, and worshippedH7812 the LORD with their faces to the ground.

These people were in the crouched position, face to the ground, with their hands out front--worship. It’s not exactly what we’re used to, is it? The thing that we do in church today is not worship. Worship is something that we rarely see in the church. Sure, we see the lifting up of hands, but prostrate is foreign and even despised.

With lifting up H4607 mo^‛al mo'-al From H5927; a raising (of the hands): - lifting up.Lift up H5375 na^śa^' na^sa^h naw-saw', naw-saw' A primitive root; to lift, in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively, absolutely and relatively: - accept, advance, arise, (able to, [armour], suffer to) bear (-er, up), bring (forth), burn, carry (away), cast, contain, desire, ease, exact, exalt (self), extol, fetch, forgive, furnish, further, give, go on, help, high, hold up, honourable (+ man), lade, lay, lift (self) up, lofty, marry, magnify, X needs, obtain, pardon, raise (up), receive, regard, respect, set (up), spare, stir up, + swear, take (away, up), X utterly, wear, yield.

Hand H3027 ya^d yawd A primitive word; a hand (the open one (indicating power, means, direction, etc.), in distinction from H3709, the closed one); used (as noun, adverb, etc.) in a great variety of applications, both literally and figuratively, both proximate and remote: - (+ be) able, X about, + armholes, at, axletree, because of, beside, border, X bounty, + broad, [broken-] handed, X by, charge, coast, + consecrate, + creditor, custody, debt, dominion, X enough, + fellowship, force, X from, hand [-staves, -y work], X he, himself, X in, labour, + large, ledge, [left-] handed, means, X mine, ministry, near, X of, X order, ordinance, X our, parts, pain, power, X presumptuously, service, side, sore, state, stay, draw with strength, stroke, + swear, terror, X thee, X by them, X them-selves, X thine own, X thou, through, X throwing, + thumb, times, X to, X under, X us, X wait on, [way-] side, where, + wide, X with (him, me, you), work, + yield, X your-selves.

Act 10:25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshippedG4352 him.

Act 10:26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

Psa 134:1 A Song of degrees. Behold, blessH1288 ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD, which by night stand in the house of the LORD.

Psa 134:2 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and blessH1288 the LORD.

Psa 134:3 The LORD that made heaven and earth blessH1288 thee out of Zion.

H1288 ba^rak baw-rak' A primitive root; to kneel; by implication to bless God (as an act of adoration), and (vice-versa) man (as a benefit); also (by euphemism) to curse (God or the king, as treason): - X abundantly, X altogether, X at all, blaspheme, bless, congratulate, curse, X greatly, X indeed, kneel (down), praise, salute, X still, thank.

The Hebrew word for “bless” is “barak”, which means to kneel. Yehovah will not kneel to you, so the implied meaning for yehovah to return the blessing is well in order.

Behold, kneel before Yehovah, all ye servants of Yehovah, which stand by night in the house of Yehovah. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and kneel before Yehovah. Yehovah, that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion.

So far, there’s still not been much said about prayer, attitude, music, or adoration. Worship appears to be the body language of obeisance. It seems that it is a correct phrase to say “praise and worship” as praise is different from worship.

In the Bible, most instances of worship are spontaneous with nothing or little being said. Would we be more adept in serving Yehovah if we set aside a time of worship in the sanctuary before the service of praise? Would there be a blessing that we have been missing until now? It would certainly be something new and different for most of us, and it would be pleasing to God.
